My Dear Fanny,
I am very much obli-
ged to you for your very nice little
letter. It was a very good letter.
I am glad that you like the Crucifix
and that Mother
your wearing it.
It is very lonesome here
without Mother and Willie
and I hope you will write to me
often. Besides being without children
I have not even a dog or a cat to
bear me company. If the dogs and
cats avoid the house I think by
and by that I shall be able to

entice a mouse and make a
companion of him.
I learned yesterday for the
first time that the real St Nicholas
day as understood by the Dutch
is not Christmas but the 6th day
of December.
Governor Fishs hung
up their stockings night before last.
But it is only among the descendants
of the Dutch that that that day is
observed.
