My dear Mrs Seward,
I have daily acknowl-
edged in heart the kind-
ness of your note, & have
daily rebuked my own
tardiness with the pen.
I am glad to hear
of your health & strength,
though I fear you have
not so much of these
as of goodness.

What a mellowing of
the Northern heart towards
us heretics seems to have
taken place! And yet New
York & Mass—where the
pulses of Freedom beat the
strongest—will show
less at the polls against
slavery than other states.
Oh! I so long for
Union among men who
think substantially alike!
The “Know Nothings”
here have disturbed our

election, by introducing
another element; & the
Whig office-seekers disturb
us more. But the
right will yet prevail!
Ever affectionately yours,
Charles Sumner
