Newspaper scrap has been attached.
Phila-
19th April ‘58
My dear Seward,
I am troubled by
this scrap which I have
just met in a news-
paper. Likely some mis-
chief-maker has been at
work.
You know well how I have
always spoken & felt about
Ld Napier

that I could never think of
any such interference as
is most absurdly attrib-
uted to me-even if its
impotence were not too glaring.
I know nothing of the rumor
mentioned.
Ld Napier knows so
well our public press,
that I doubt not he
will regard it as a
fiction. But if the

subject should chance
to come up when you
see him, & you think it
worth while, pray let him
know that nobody can
be more astonished at
such a paragraph than
myself. It is an evi-
dent invention-founded on
exaggeration with regard
to his position, & imagi-
nation with regard to mine.
I wish I could write
that I am well. My
physician here, Dr. Wistar

regards my case now
as “serious.” This recur-
rence of bad symptoms with
out any adequate cause &
after such slight exertion
as those made, shows deep-
seated disease, & he in-
sists that I shall renounce
everything but the care of my
health till next year. He
wishes me to go at once to
Europe. I shall not deter-
mine this till the session
closes. In a short time I
shall see you at Washington
again. Remember me to Mrs S.
Ever yours
Charles Sumner
