Editorial Note

William Henry Seward’s series of travel letters in 1859 are organized and listed by the date of each entry.
19
Thursday May 19. 1859.
Off Scilly.
All is vivacity. An outward bound steamer has
just passed us and she will report us in
New York ten days hence. We are making land
and tomorrow morning will debark at Southamp-
ton
. The voyage has been exceedingly pleasant
and agreeable. I salute England the wisest
of the nations though not the most learned
the strongest of nations though not the most
valorous, the purest of nations though not
the most chivalrous, the most munificent
of nations though not the most hospitable,
and to the dear family circle for whom
this record of the wanderings of a honest mem-
ber is made I send the assurances of ever
increasing affection.
