Editorial Note

William Henry Seward’s series of travel letters in 1859 are organized and listed by the date of each entry.
The Hague, Friday Dec, 2 d 1859.
My dear Fanny,
Henry Hudson
Birth: 1565 Death: 1611-06-23
gave to the Netherlands the
discovery of New Hudson River in 1608 I think. Here I
am in a hotel that bears its date on its front 1625, only
seventeen years after the discovery of New York and concurrent
with the settlement of that Country. What is very strange is
at that about every house private as well as public
seems as old. Holland is the country which we
Americans find most resembling our own in architecture
furniture, habits of domestic life &c. I have just
come from a ride to Scheveningen the sea front from which
Charles 2 d
Birth: 1630-05-29 Death: 1685-02-06
embarked when he proceeded to England
and restored the monarchy after the death of Cromwell
Birth: 1599-04-25 Death: 1658-09-03
.
But I must have done with the Hague – I leave it and
Holland. I shall go to Brussels tomorrow evening,
and remain there until Monday.
