Tuesday 30th
I have not sent my letter–
and since I wrote it we have
had one from you– I am
glad you are feeling cheer-
fully– we are much more
so now that the commu-
nication is uninterrupted–
Four of the companies left
yesterday– We went to the
depot to see them off– there
was a dense crowd assembled,
the prison wall, and railroad
bridges seemed alive– there
was the greatest enthusiasm–
The men leaned out of the
windows waving their
hats, and cheering in answer
to the hurrahs and the
waving of handkerchiefs
and hats by the crowds–
Today the streets seem quite
deserted– three more companies
leave before long– at present
they will be at Elmira– The
society met yesterday after-
noon – and was largely attend-
ed – they began to make shirts –
I went to church Sunday
afternoon as I expected to –
and liked Mr Hawley’s

has rained all day– and
excepting a short time in
the afternoon– we have
had one thunderstorm since
then– but now it looks very
pleasant– I suppose you
will very soon be in the
new house–
