Friday June 7th
My dearest Henry
Your letter
of Wednesday came
last evening – We are
continually thinking
of you and trying to
ascertain how much of
all we see in the
public journals about
the danger or safety
of Washington is true –
The people here are
hoping for a call for
more troops thinking
it is better to have
too many than too few.
Page 2

I dreamed last night
that we were all
together in the Capitol
at Washington when
it was blown up with
powder – of course
the explosion awoke me
and I could not
tell whether we escaped
or were buried in
the ruins –
I see no evidence that
other European governments
than England are in
favour of our dismem-
berment but are no
longer incredulous on
the subject of lack
Page 3

of good faith any
where, since England
has failed –
To day there are to
be funeral services in
honor of Mr Douglas
Birth: 1813-04-23 Death: 1861-06-03

at the 2nd Church –
bells tolled, stores
closed &c –
Dr Robinson

comes in
to ask me to write your
asking your influence
in getting the appointment
of Mr Gardner
Birth: 1800-05-08 Death: 1873-06-04

Gardners appointment

will secure him the
place of Physician
which he has been seeking
some time – I of course
am in favour of the Dr –
who has
I suppose Clarence
Birth: 1828-10-07 Death: 1897-07-24
is
in Washington at this
time –his regiment left
Elmira yesterday –
I begin to despair of seeing
any of you home this
summer – When I am
sure you are not coming I
must write some of the
things I wished to say –
Love to the children
x Birth: 1830-07-08  Death: 1915-04-25  Birth: 1844-12-09  Death: 1866-10-29

May god preserve you all
your own
Frances –
