Teusday morning
July 23d
My dearest Henry
We are all
anxiety and uncertainty
today about the terrible
battle of Sunday – There
are so many conflicting
accounts that I know
not which to believe
though the preponderance
of information is of
the saddest kind –
I can imagine how
painful the situation
of those must be who
are nearer the

the Army and am
grateful for the
wise counsel you
gave Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
to stay
at home –
We are waiting
impatiently for the
morning papers –
fearing to have the
worst intelligence
confirmed – I could
think of nothing last
night but the
bereaved families
of those who have
given their lives
for the maintenance
of liberty –

May God preserve
& strengthen those
who remain –
your own
Frances –
