My dear Mother
I have your
letter & Fannys
My boots came safely
Not withstanding what you say
in regard to the R.R. I feel entirely
confident that it has never been
safer at anytime this summer
than it is today. My command
extends over forty five miles of
it and I have pretty good opportunity
of being informed what is going
on in the vicinity. Since I last
wrote you however some of the
troops here have been ordered away
so that my garrison is not quite
so strong & on that account perhaps
Page

it is as well you did not
come
The Division consisting of three
Brigades which I formerly commanded
has been consolidated into one Brigade
my comd is therefore known now as
the 1st Brig 3rd Divn Dept W Va.
You ask about my health
I have not been very well since
the attack I had when I first
came on, and have to use great
care in regard to my diet. I have
had a slight fever & a nervous pulse
of about a 100. I am however
feeling much better within the
past few days & think I shall
not have any more trouble
I have a very good surgeon on
my staff old school of course
I have not been confined to the

house at all. My duties
are quite light here now
compared with what they used
to be
Your Affectionate son
Will
I think Rathbone
able to find another house he
seems to be willing to do so if he
can find one
