My dear Gus
I have your
letter of the 13th, Jenny
I were both very sorry
that we did not see you
when you were here.
We shall probably be here all
this week & perhaps next and
in fact I expect to be here
the greater part of the time
for the next three months
We are at a loss to know
why you were ordered away
from Washington, I had sincerely
hoped that you would be
allowed to remain there as
long as Father

I don't now see how he
is to get along without you
seems to me he ought to
use his influence to have
you retained there while
he stays at least, but
perhaps there are some good
reasons for the change
if so I should really like
to know what they are, for
if not I should do all I
can to persuade
you ordered back
But why don't you settle
the whole matter by resigning
and going back until his
term is out and then going
to Auburn and take charge
of his business there, and the
Western lands, There is enough
of it to keep one person entirely

employed and I should
be pleased to give it up
to you if you would come
Jenny & I would be delighted
to have you live with us
and then you would be
settled for life which seems
to me would be far pleas-
anter than the uncertainty of
your present vocation
Jenny send love,
Your aff bro
