This letter was written by Olive Risley Seward for William H. Seward
U.S. Legation.
Peking, China, Nov. 3, 1870.
My dear William,
I have the pleasure to
inform you that we arrived here
safely last night, after a journey
which although it had many
hard ships, was less severe than
we had apprehended.
We are hospitably and well
lodged at the home of the U.S.
Legation. Gov.
exceedingly kind.
It is intimated to me that
certain official receptions and
courtesies may come off after two
or three days. When they are

passed, we are purposing to make
some excursions into the country.
I now think that we shall leave
Peking about the 21st inst, and reach
Shanghai between the 1st and 13th of
December, ready to proceed after a
little to Hong Kong and Singapore .
We have heard thus far nothing
from home. I hope you will telegraph
me by European line, when you
hear of my arrival at any point
in India.
