Biography
Daniel H. Barnes was a teacher at the New York High School, which GWS attended in 1825. George speaks very highly of WHS's "old colleague and Friend Mr D H Barnes." From the Cyclopaedia of Biblical, theological, and ecclesiastical literature by McClintock: "Daniel Henry Barnes, a Baptist minister, was born in Columbia Co, N.Y., April 25, 1785, was graduated with honor at Union College in 1809, and in 1811 became principal of the Poughkeepsie Academy, where he joined the Baptist Church, and was licensed to preach. Mr. Barnes was very successful as a teacher in Poughkeepsie, in Cincinnati, and in New York city. Among his pupils were President Wayland, Bishop Potter of Pennsylvania, and Drs. E. Mason, W. R. Williams, and John Macaulay. He was elected president of several colleges, but declined. Mr. Barnes was a contributor to several periodicals. He was thrown from a coach and killed, OCt. 27, 1828."
