Abijah Fitch

Abijah Fitch was born in Cooperstown, NY in 1800 or 1799 and while living there he married Lanah Nelson, who was from Lansingburg, NY. The couple had 12 children, of whom 11 reached adulthood. He moved to Auburn around 1820 and became a distinguished citizen. He was a successful merchant and helped to advance Auburn materially after he moved there. During his lifetime he became interested in the railroad and helped to aid its creation and other projects related to it, including the projection of the Auburn & Syracuse Railroad. He was an exemplary citizen and was well liked by the residents of Auburn. At the time of the Alaska purchase Fitch accompanied William Henry Seward on his trip around the world. He died in Auburn in 1882 or 1883.
