Biography

James Speed attended St. Joseph's College and Transylvania University, where he studied law. Speed practiced law in Louisville, Kentucky until heading to Washington D.C. to advise Abraham Lincoln. In 1864 Speed was appointed attorney general. He served under both Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Speed resigned in 1866 over a disagreement over one of the president's policies.
