February 27, 1824--licensed as a counselor at law in the state supreme court
February 14, 1826--appointed District Attorney of Chautauqua County
June 4, 1827--admitted to common pleas of Erie County, New York
March 1, 1832—licensed as a solicitor and counselor in Court of Chancery
October 12, 1841—admitted to the U.S. district court of the northern district of
 New York as a solicitor, counselor and advocate
March 12, 1846—appointed city attorney of Buffalo, New York8
June 1847--Elected New York State Supreme Court Justice

On 23 January 1816,10 11 James married Sarah "Sally" Fitch, daughter of Roswell
White Fitch and Sarah Sheffield Fitch. James and Sally Mullett had five children: James P., born about 1817; a daughter born about 1821 who died at age 3 when her clothes caught fire; John Cushman, born 29
January 1826; Sarah Sylvina, born 12 November 1828; and Elizabeth, born 11 February 1832
and died in 1847 while a student at Fredonia Academy. ''
