At the beginning of the Civil War, Loring sided with the South. He resigned from the US Army on May 13, 1861. He was given the nickname "Old Blizzards." Later in life he served in the Egyptian army. Frederick William Seward mentions him in 18610604FWS_FMS letting his mother know that Gus was headed home and had only stayed because Colonel Loring asked him to.
