Hugh Percy, born Hugh Smithson, was the first Duke of Northumberland of the third creation (1715-1786.) In 1729 he succeeded his grandfather as fourth baronet of Stanwick, Yorskhire. He represented Middlesex in parliament from May 15, 1740 until 1750, when he was elevated to the peerage. On July 7 1740 he married Elizabeth Seymour. From 1750 until 1780 Elizabeth and Hugh figured prominently in social and political life. On March 20 1753 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland and on November 18, 1756 he received the garter. In 1762 he became part of the privvy council to Queen Charlotte. He voted against the Stamp Act. The Duke died in 1786 and was buried in St.Nicholas's Chapel in Westminster Abbey.
