James was Harriet Pitney's son with her first husband, William Porter Trask. He was born in Mississippi where the Trask family is from and moved to Louisiana and California as an adult. In 1847, FMS wrote that Harriet Pitney was feared to be near-death so she wanted to see her son but he was "in Louisiana and cannot reach her under three weeks." Later sometime in the 1850s, he moved to California. His voting registration files from California mark his occupations as miner and later a real estate broker.
