Biography
William Wallace Smith Bliss was born in Whitehall, NY. He graduated from West Point in 1833. He served in the Cherokee war and then became assistant adjutant-general at the headquarters of the military departments from 1842-1845. He served in the Mexican-American War. After the War he became private secretary to President Taylor, and married Taylor's daughter Mary Elizabeth.
