Benjamin Billings Clapp was born in 1802. In 1833 he married Laura Jane (nee Green) the daughter of Archibald Green, former sheriff of Cayuga Co. Benjamin and Laura settled in Port Byron, Cayuga. Benjamin "engaged in mercantile pursuits." Benjamin and Laura had the following children: Merrick Green b. 1834, Robert Phelps b. 1836, Lawrence Hamlin b.1839, Eliza b.1841, and Emma Sophia b. 1847.
