WRG Mellen was a Reverend at the Auburn Universalist Church from 1851-1855. According to a History of Auburn, William Seward "sent Mr. Mellen on an embassy to Mauritius on the Coast of Africa." Mellen also became the head of the NY Conference of Unitarian Churches, and was a Chaplin in the 24th Mass. regiment during the Civil War. He married Diana Nelson in 1844.
