Teusday Feb 5th
My dearest Henry
In answering a
letter to Mr Mellen
Birth: 1822 Death: 1896
I find
I ought before this to have
mentioned it — After
some high compliments
to your speech he adds
“Tell Mr Seward that
the approbation of his
speech in this region is
general and earnest” —
He also speaks of having
written to you in behalf –
of a friend
Unknown
who is every
way worthy, but for whom
he was unwilling to ask
of you this favour
Page 2

fearing you might think
it impertinent &c &c —
Thursday – As Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29

sent a letter yesterday
I delayed mine another
day – We are cheered
by the result of the
Virginia election —
I hope Washington may
be more safe than
has been apprehended
The Democrats at the
North seem to be doing
all they can to increase
the difficulty with the
Secessionists —
Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
is sick to day
we all take our turns
the whole family not
having been well a week
Page 3

at a time this Winter –
Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
is well again –
She & Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
went to skate
on the lake yesterday –
many persons gather there
daily – To day we have
a violent storm of
snow & wind —
I have letters from you
& Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
– May God
protect you
your own
Frances –
I open my letter to say a word
about Will’s affairs – I think
he may have told Fred that
a starch company of which
Dr Willard
Birth: 1798-12-24 Death: 1886-03-12
is either President or
director wishes to engage Mc
Dougall
Birth: 1839-09-14 Death: 1914-05-24
as agent they
offer him a large salary
Page 4

and some of the bankers here
are endeavouring to persuade
him to accept the place
not wishing another banking
firm established – Few young
men enjoy so much of the
confidence of their fellow citizens
as Mc Dougall and I
should be sorry to have
the loss of him as a partner
added to other disheartening
circumstances which beset
our boy at present – Cannot
Mr Blatchford
Birth: 1798-04-23 Death: 1875-09-04
be persuaded
to make that loan at once–
I write this without Will’s
knowledge or consent –
He was not willing I
should trouble you while
you were so hurried —
