Charles Rittenhouse Coburn

Biography
Without formal training, he became a school teacher in 1827 at age 18 in Oswego. He trained other teachers at Oswego Academy until 1847, where he encountered Julia Humphrey Seward. After leaving Oswego, he entered the lecture circuit and became one of the editors of "the New York Teacher." He went back to Pennsylvania in the 1850s, becoming superintendent of the Susquehanna county schools and then state superintendent of schools for Pennsylvania from 1863 until 1866.
