Biography
Luman E Barnes was a hardware merchant in Auburn, NY and William Henry Seward, Jr.'s employer from 1856 to 1857. It appears that Will, Jr. was also living with Barnes while employed by him and they did not seem to get along very well. In a letter to his brother Frederick William Seward on November 30, 1856 Will says "I hardly think that I shall stay with Barnes this winter for several reasons one of them is that he wants me to work untill 11 or 12 every night and also all days Sunday."
