Biography

Captain in the U.S. Navy until his resignation in 1854. Oversaw his family's mining and milling operations in North Carolina. Flour supplier of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Pardoned by William H. Seward after the war. Continued his family's business interests in iron until his death in 1908.
