Second son of Gen. Robert E. Lee and Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee of Arlington, Virginia. William attended Harvard University, beginning in 1854, but did not graduate. In 1857, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army and fought in the campaign against the Mormons. In 1859, he left the army, married Charlotte Wickham, and commenced farming at White House, an estate he inherited from his grandfather George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted son of President George Washington. William joined the Confederate Army in 1861 and was captured by Union forces in 1863. During his imprisonment at Fort Lafayette, New York, his wife Charlotte died. After the war, William returned to his White House estate and remarried Mary Tabb Bolling with whom he had two sons. William engaged in politics later in life, serving as a Virginia Senator from 1875 to 1878 and in the U.S. Congress from 1887 until his death in 1891.
