Biography

Dr. Thomas Miller was born in Port Royal, Virginia, to Maj. Thomas Ray Miller, Chief Clerk of the Navy Dept., and his wife Sally Attaway Buckner. Miller came with his family to Washington in 1816 and attended Gonzaga College until he began medical studies with Dr. Cutbush and Dr. Henry Huntt. Miller received further medical training in Philadelphia and returned to Washington to commence his practice. Miller practiced at the Cholera Hospital in Washington and gained a favorable reputation among well-placed families. In 1833, Miller married Virginia Collins Jones, daughter of General Walter Jones, United States Attorney for the District of Washington. According to a family history written by his daughter, Virginia, delivered before the Columbia Historical Society in 1899, Dr. Miller treated many notable politicians and their families, as well as foreign diplomats, including Lord and Lady Napier. Dr. Miller was a practicing physician at Providence Hospital, Columbia Hospital, and helped establish the Children's Hospital and St. Elizabeth's Asylum for the Insane. Miller's daughter intimates that her father was sympathetic to Southern families residing in Washington and that his house was monitored during the war. She also indicates he had a "passionate love of flowers." Dr. Miller is mentioned several times in Seward family letters and Frances "Fanny" Seward's diaries from their time in Washington, D.C., although it does not appear that he treated the Seward family. In her 1860 diary, Fanny alludes to his status as an "allopathic" physician, whereas the Seward Family preferred homeopathic physicians.
