Mary (Johnson) Stover Brown was born in Tennessee, the daughter of Andrew and Eliza Johnson. In 1852, she married Daniel Stover of Carter County, Tennessee. The couple had three children. Her husband died in 1864 and she moved with her sister after the Civil War, Mrs. Martha Patterson, to Washington, DC, to assist her father, President Andrew Johnson in entertaining at the White House. In 1869, Mary remarried William Brown, but the marriage ended in divorce. Frances "Fanny" Seward references seeing her several times in her 1866 diary while in Washington, DC.
