In 1866, he married Alice Elizabeth Miller. In 1910, he was nominated Senator of Greene and Ulster counties in New York State. The couple had five children. William was referenced in Frances "Fanny" Seward's 1866 diary on the occasion of his marriage to Alice Miller.
