Dear S
With this you will receive a letter from Holley
aid in promoting his appointment to the Office of Clerk of the
house. Had he written It to go a head–you know Holley as well
as I do: he wants the Office on account of the perquisites: he will make
a better Clerk than any other man, if he is a mind to, and I think
he will take pride in discharging its duties – I am aware that
you cannot be conspicuous in canvassing for offices. and that it
is not prudent to show our own zeal for any particular individual
but look at Holley: he is poor, and wants this place for his daily
bread: I know all that can be said : Holley should be independent
his talents are sufficient but again you must look at him as he
is: he is too proud to beg. and to work he is ashamed: unless it be that
kind of work that suits him, at bottom he is high minded. Honora–
ble. and is a man of superior talents and acquirements – This
man I have seen bowed down by poverty: and looking with fearful
apprehension to his future fate & condition: and suffering horrors which
none but men of his temperament can feel – and although I
have sworn at him and about him on account of some of his
peculiarities yet nonetheless there is no man who I would rather
see in a comfortable situation than he: and I would that you
do for him all you can consistently – you can write to Miller
& other members without committing yourself
What is to be done with Col Stone
of the party All well:
