If there has been no nomination for judge of this county
I am inclined to think the matter had better be suspended a short time. There
is considerable opposition manifested towards the appointment of Mr Jones
by the abolitionists, for no cause whatever it is true, but such opposition is
generally the more violent because it is groundless: I shall see Mr Jones in
a few days, and his own opinion on this subject will be Valuable: he is in
no way anxious for the Office, and if it shall be deemed inexpedient to appoint
him, he will most cheerfully acquiesce.
Judge Howell
we may want a Supreme court commissioner. Mr Hubbel
take the Office of Judge, if he will I am convinced it is the best appoint-
ment that can be made. I will see him on the subject and think
our members would reccommend his appointment.
I was in Auburn yesterday, they are in an elegant
muss about offices, and cannot agree about anything: I find young

didates:, I am anxious to obtain the help of some young man in the
Office: the business is overwhelming me. I have had my eye on Fosgate but
I fear his health is insufficient to keep up with the labor that would be
thrown upon him here. He appears to be a young man of talent, and the
Office of Surrogate might enable him to establish himself permanently in
the world: The other candidates have many advantages which he does not
possess, and I could wish he might be appointed: I have suspended negotiations
with him until the result of his application is known, and whatever may be
its issue I am apprehensive I should work him beyond his strength

have, and I must have some aid: do you know a young man who would
answer my purpose, oif you do, I wish you would let me know
I dont consult Sibley in this matter at all having told him
I intended to have more help, he seems to assent
