Mendham, N.J.
Oct 27th. 1858.
My dear Uncle,
Mr. Grier
Birth: 1802-09-27 Death: 1878-12-20
wished
me to write to you and ask
you to give him sufficient di–
rections to warrent him in
giving me the necessary funds
for my intended journey to Cal–
ifornia
. As I told you in Florida
I should like to have about
$500 so situated that I can draw
upon it when I get there, and
my ticket will cost from $250 to
$300, making in all from you
to 800 dollars. I have made the
acquaintance since I have been
here of a Rev. Mr. Brayton
Birth: 1821-11-29 Death: 1869-04-12
of

San Francisco who has given
me a very flattering account
of California and much useful
information about my journey
thither. As he does not intend to
return till next March he has
promised me some letters of intro–
duction, and in return I take the
liberty to give him a letter to you.
I believe the acquaintance may be
a desirable one as Mr Brayton is
the Editor of a Religious ^Paper^ in San
Francisco. If you can make
the necessary arrangements I should
like to sail in the Moses Taylor
on the 20th of November. Give my
regards to Aunt Francis

, Cousin
Fannie

and .
I am with great respect
Your aff. Nephew,
Samuel S. Seward
Hon. Wm H. Seward

P.S. If I do not see you
again before I sail will you be
so kind as to write me a
few letters of introduction if
you know of any person likely
to benefit me. I will use them
judiciously.
Your Nephew,
S.S.S.
