To day I have witnessed the most impressive pageant I ever
saw. The Charity scholars of all the scholars in London
(five thousand in all) gathered and dressed in their neat and
tasteful dresses with and decorated with flowers in St Pauls
Cathedral, and on seats on every side rising from the floor
to the base of the dome, while the vast nave and
our transept was filled with ten thousand
spectators, A sublime service with more
music was prepared, The children
joining their rich and earnest
voices, to those of the
choir, and the
great organ
accom-
panying

the sacred song.
I dined with a large party composed
of Whig and Tory statesmen

among other distinguished speakers. His f like in America is

I am about fixing my departure
from London – for the 25 th, but to spend a
week in the country, and then to the continent
but as yet I have not formed a plan –
I am unable to find time to continue
the desultory notes – addressed to your dear mother

She must therefore take this letter for all – and
with it the devoted affection of your father
