My dearest Henry
I have your letter
of Thursday – We are
constantly looking for
a collision somewhere
between the opposing
forces – I dread yet
wish it were over –
we think and talk
of little beside– It has
always seemed to me
unwise to place civil-
ians in command &
it likewise seems
unjust to place inex-
perienced men in the
regular army over those
who have done service.
The French are more
wise and just in
this matter – If I am
not mistaken a man
in the French Army
can rise by merit
from a private to an
officer– This is right.
Can any thing be
done about Murray
