Tuesday
August 13th
My dear Mother.
When
arranging Fred’s
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
writ-
ing table just now –
I found in a pigeon-
hole among old letters,
a long letter of yours
to me written on
Sunday July 7th & with
it one from Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
to
you – a description of
her visit to the steam
ship to see the Webbs
Birth: 1826-01-02
Death: 1890-01-16
Birth: 1802-02-08
Death: 1884-06-07
I have never seen
either of them before.
Fred must have re-
ceived them at the
Dept & forgotten to
give them to me.
I am much interest-
ed in Fannys letter,
having often wonder-
ed if Mrs Webb liked
to go to Brazil – It seem-
ed to me like exile.
I am so glad that
Fanny Webb
Unknown
is with
her.
In your letter
you write about
purchasing a Dessert-
set in Washington.
The plates I ordered
came – finally – Still I
find we have not
enough. I did not
get more dinner-plates
of which we had 3 doz.
& only increased the
soup & dessert to 2 doz.
We will need extra
ones for the many
courses – particularly
dinner-plates.
At the time I ordered
them our stay here
seemed so uncertain
I thought best not
to incur any unnecess-
ary expense.
Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
wants a set of
Sèvres china – & wrote
to Mr Sandford
Birth: 1823-06-15 Death: 1891-05-21
our
Minister at Brussels
to ask permission to
buy it at the Imperial
Manufactory.
Mr Sandford wrote
about several sets he
saw, their prices &c,
he waits for further
information in regard
to color, number of
pieces, & to know if
you wanted the cypher
or crest upon them.
We are waiting your
coming here or our
going home to consult
you about it.
I suggested we should
get a handsome
dessert-service & not
both which would be
very expensive, & in
fact the dessert is all
that shows at a French
dinner. We have
always company at
dinner & use the
blue dessert set nearly
every day.
We hear the 19th regt
is one of the six turned
over by the Governor
Birth: 1811-02-08 Death: 1883-02-14
to the U. S. service
for two years.
I think Clarence
Birth: 1828-10-07 Death: 1897-07-24
will
not like this. The
last time I saw him,
he was very anxious
for the three months
to expire. We hear
that Col Clark
Birth: 1823-11-02 Death: 1912-04-07
has
been in town a week
or more, but have
not seen him.
I think Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
must
be beyond the reach
of mails. Peremptory
orders were sent him
from the War Dept
to report himself
immediately. He was
expected a month ago.
Mr Wilkinson
Birth: 1817-05-09 Death: 1889-12-02
came
on Saturday to take
Fitz Henry Warren's
Birth: 1816-01-11 Death: 1878-06-21
place
as correspondent to
the Tribune. He dined
with us last evening.
I did not know him
he is so pale & thin.
His knee is entirely
well, but his throat is
almost constantly sore.
Augustus Canfield
Birth: 1829-12-04 Death: 1867-10-25
has resigned his Consul-
ship on account of his
health. Did Caroline
Birth: 1834-07-25 Death: 1922-02-28
say anything about him?
Your letter came
last evening. I will
hire the woman
Unknown
I
wrote you about.
Your daughter
Anna.
