Biography

"John S. Clark was born John Swarthout Smith Duvall, but adopted his mother's maiden name in accordance with the wishes of his grandfather, Bennoni Clark."  He married Mary Ann Crofoot and had five children.

During the Civil War John enlisted as a captain of Company G., 19th New York Volunteers. He was promoted to Colonel, and then eventually commissioned to General by the end of the War. 

He is mentioned as a visitor to the Sewards' house in Fanny's pocket(18630101_18631227_FASj) diary on  January 24, 1863., "Calls besides  Sen. Anthony of K.Y. who came alone, there three who came together Gen. Clarke, Gen Martindale, & Capt Parker ."
