736 South 10th Street
Philadel. – Apl. 19. 1866 –
My dear Cousin,
Some ten days ago, or more,
I wrote you, asking your cooperation in a
design I had formed to apply for the
agency or superintendency of the Merchants
Union Express Co. of the city of Phila-
delphia, and thus far I have been
without a reply. Fearing my letter may
have miscarried, or missed you in your
numerous journeys from home in the
company’s business, I write again –
The more I think of this matter the
more anxious I am to secure the
agency, and the more certain I feel that
I can do the matter justice. Impa –
tient at the delay of your letter (not with
you) I have already commenced
operations here and with a reasonable
prospect of means. I have been introduced
to Messrs. Caldwell

& Lewis

the Trustees.
and made a formal application for the
position. Tho’ I have had no experience
at this particular line of business, I
have had valuable experience in a Law
Office before the war, and all thro’ the
war in the discharge of all kinds of duties –
on General Gd’s

staff. If I am informed
of the routine I can learn that in a
few days, while no one can do better
in looking after the small leakages,
drumming up business, and in the general
superintendence of the concern.
Mr. Lewis asked me to get what
endorsement I could from Auburn.
Will you then be so kind as to write
to me or to them as soon as convenient.
If I take the appointment I would
like it at once – so that I can look
up all the details and be prepared
when the time comes.
Please give my love to Cousin
Jennie

and any other member of the
family who may be with you.
Write to Gen Gd at Detroit if
you want any further knowledge of my
business habits and qualifications –
Hoping to hear from you soon. I
am.
Aff. Your Cousin,
S. S. Seward
