Editorial Note

This letter was written by Olive Risley Seward for William Henry Seward
Auburn July 6th 1870
My dear Agustus,
Your letter of the 14th of
June was received. The con-
dition of my health has
not permitted in a severe
or varied study. I was
therefore obliged to post-pone
the proposed lecture before
the Historical Society in-
definitely. I am receiving
many pleasant visitors

and the receptions together
with my correspondence

and some attention necess-
arily bestowed upon private
affairs keep me abundantly
occupied.
It is now reduced to
a certainty that I am unable
to endure a winter in this
climate. In seeking a
retreat I may find it
important to leave home
before the close of the
summer. I think it will
be well for you therefore
to come to Auburn as early
as the 10th of August. I
have lately spent ten

days at Montrose very
pleasantly. We are having
intense heat here, but we
find relief in frequent
visits to Williams new
place on the lake shore
