Auburn, March 19th 1871
My dear Father,
The box containing
the furs arrived safely just a week
ago; all I can do, is to send you
many, many thanks! I never thought
to have such an elegant cloak,
and dear Nellys
Birth: 1862-09-11 Death: 1921-10-05
is so beautiful,
and just like her –soft and pure
and beautiful! Please thank Olive
Birth: 1844-07-15 Death: 1908-11-27

for her share in the selections for
me — I have put them away in
cedar drawers for the summer,
and hope to find them safe —
Tomorrow Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
and I start
on our journey to California, ex-
pecting to be gone two months,
Will has not been well all winter
and for the past month has
coughed a good deal we are all
very anxious about him, and know
Page 2

that he needs rest from business
and hope that the change of climate
will be of great benefit to him—
I leave the dear children
Birth: 1864-11-10
in the care
of Cora Richardson
Birth: 1845-01-15 Death: 1890-12-10
, and the Doctor
Unknown

and their Grandmother
Birth: 1812-03-30 Death: 1893-11-13
with being
near enough to be called easily —
We have very pleasant travelling com-
panions, and I am in hopes, to be
able to keep Will free from business
thoughts the most of the time —
I do not wish to give you the idea
that he is very sick, as he is not,
but it is best to take sickness
at the beginning, in order to be sure
of a cure: his cough now is from
the throat — and he needs rest —
The children are perfectly well
and very willing to have me go
with their father — Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
is very
well. I wish also to inform you
that the Eagle

and dog
 Death: 1870-03-27
are very well.

Mr Seymour
Birth: 1791-04-15 Death: 1875-12-03
has been sick, but is now
as well as usual—
Give my love to Olive, and thank
her for her kind letter. I will
write to her soon, also my love
to Hattie
Birth: 1850-03-05 Death: 1925-07-27

I presume Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
has written of
Miss Cushmans
Birth: 1816-07-23 Death: 1876-02-18
departure for her
home —
With much love and many thanks
Your affectionate daughter
Janet
