had letters or formerly known
in the East.
Our trip to Oregon was
made overland by about 500
miles by stage which the
ladies found pretty hard
part of the way, but through
the kindness of the Stage Co we
manged to stop over nights
and took ten days for the
trip instead of six days in
which time the stages usually
go through. Returning here
Page 3

we came by Steamer in three
days, from Portland. The
little Steamer Active which
took you to Alaska was
lost last winter on the
rocks near Victoria.
On our rout home we stop a
day or two each at Lake Tahoe
& Salt Lake City, which latter
place is now all alive with
mineing excitement, [ Pepole ]

are flocking there from every
direction & I think the Saints
fear that the Gentiles may ere
long be in the ascendency.
I am not a little pleased
with what I have seen on
this coast & find much to
admire here in their institutions
& manners The contrast between
the selfish interest of the Eastern
States and the Encouragement
afforded to those who are working
to develop this Coast is very marked
Page 4

Here the successful energetic man
is encouraged & sustained in
his enterprise and his own
advancement is looked upon
as a help to others or the
Country at large. While with
us individual success & enterprise
is almost always followed
by envey & jealosy of the
Masses. Were I a you[ ng ]
