Biography: Possibly found in 18250314BJS_WHS as BJS' employer in New York City: "You ask me with much apparent solicitude after my situation with John Steward. & ask if a change of situation might not be desirable & could not be accomplished. I have lately learned a fact which enables me to understand his conduct and I now no longer wonder why I have lost J. Steward's affections wherein ^on my part^ was no change of conduct. . . In our city is a firm of Englishmen – rich & respectable – who have a branch in Liverpool– these have asserted John Steward to a credit there, by which he has become an importer. They have lately brought out a young man & made a partner of him – brother to Edward – one of Stewards young men. Here Steward contemplates a powerful alliance of interests & consequence. His work is to put the young folks into his jobbing business & he to join the old ones as factors & go business to England for goods"
,
Biography: Definitely lived in New York City. In the obituaries notices listed below, there mentions:
"STEWARD, Martha
In this town, some days since, Mrs. MARTHA STEWARD, wife of Mr. John Steward, of New York. ["Orange County, NY deaths: from the Independent Republican", Goshen, New York by Caroline Still; 1967; Nov. 6, 1820 - Vol. 7 - # 396; tr. by FOFG mz]"
This was John Steward's wife, so we know that although he was born in Goshen, John Steward lived in NYC and is therefore very likely the John Steward referred to by BJS as BJS's employer during the '20s.
In this same compilation of obituaries, there is a mention of a John Steward, died in 1829, of Goshen. This is Judge John Steward, not the John Steward mentioned in this entry. Judge John Steward has a separate biographical entry detailing SSS's complications with burying the dead family members in the Judge's plot.Citation Notes: http://genealogytrails.com/ny/orange/obits2.html
