Biography
Maria grew up in Aurora, NY with her family, her father was the politician Daniel Avery and her mother Freelove Mitchell Avery. Maria attended Grove Hall Seminary in New Haven, Connecticut. She wrote a letter to FMS in 1852 detailing her positive experience at the school and offered to connect FMS with the school principal, Mary Dutton. When she was 31, Maria married Reverend William Washington Howard, D.D. on Jul 5,1864.
