He served as the bookeeper/treasurer of the New York, Albany, Buffalo Telegraph Co that was owned by Theodore Faxton, he worked in their office in Utica. In 1864, the company was absorbed into the Western Union Telegraph Company which operated in Rochester so Chapman moved here with his wife, Elizabeth, and their children to work in the auditing deptarment.
