My dear Pa
I received a letter from you one
day last week I am very much obliged to you for
writing to me. We have not had a hole made
under our room yet for Snip
to kill the rats. The man
week after you left home but it disturbed Ma
much that he went away and promised to come
again in a few days – We have not seen him
since. The tomatoes are all killed by the
frost the grapes were all taken away before
Ma had them picked. My garden is all
killed by the frost. The hired girl
Muirs
turned her away. I have been a great
many mornings after chesnuts but
did not get a pint any morning I went
one morning and the top of a tree blew off
and came very near falling on me there
I ran home as fast as I could I did not
get any chesnuts but I got a quart of
walnuts. I am going out to Westfeild with
you the next time you come home if you wish
me to. Ma is sick with the ague or she
would write to you to day.
your affectionate son Augustus HS
