Auburn May 26th
My dear Henry,
We reached home comfortably
Saturday night at 11 oclock – Augustus
us last night at the same hour – The
hope which has lightened my heart for this
last year has vanished – the shadows which
have succeeded it will in time become less
dark – than for God is merciful – The telegraph
announces the arrival of the 5th regiment of
Infantry at New Orleans – this indicates a
return to a more Northern station – this is
better than Corpus Christi – I did not see
the letter of Mr Renyolds
manifested much indifference about your
application – I wish you could see Fred &
talk with him – he has some objections to
Philadelphia which appear reasonable –
I think I mentioned to you the offer he had
from H Cheesebro

from young Nott
are going to Albany – dont study with Renyolds
unless you merely want to read – He has very
little practice and what he has is chiefly
consul business – you will learn little then except
from books. Hills
office and the largest business.”
Lazette
Mr Webster
from the Court House steps – there were about
1500 people present but very little enthusiasm
manifested – he came at 11 and went out
at 1 oclock – Love to all the cousins –
I sent the books &c by Augustus to New York
to be left at Jennings
I found Grandpa
well except
Fred who looks thin – I think a short
tour would do him good – your own Frances
