Editorial Note

The year on this letter was changed from 1857 to 1858 based on internal evidence. October 2 was a Saturday in 1858 and FMS went to Niagara Falls with the Napiers in October 1858.

My dear Son,
I have your Sunday
letter this morning — I presume
it is colder in Albany than
here, though it was pretty
cold here two or three days
last week – yesterday and
to day are pleasant —
Your Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
does not come
yet, I expect him certainly
this evening – He went to Goshen
Saturday and said he
should be at home early
this week — Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
and I
have had a quiet week
alone, so that I am quite
rested – We have been

expecting Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
& Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02

and still look for
them this week — Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11

writes that he will be home
some time next week
I hope you will come too.
I hear that Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
is homesick
I hope it is not to last
for continued homesickness
is very depressing and will
prevent any benefits from
change of air – I shall
go and see Mrs Watson
Birth: 1812-10-29 Death: 1889-10-09

and inquire about it —
Our fair commences
tomorrow — We were much
amused with your description
of that at Albany —
Our calf would I think
take a premium were

she taken, she is a
beautiful creature —
but we leave it for other
competitors — The horse

is running without a
shoe at present to let
her hoof grow —
Mr Patty's

house is finished
and he moving into it
to day — The Loughboroughs

are also moving into
theirs — We do not
hear any more from
Willis
Birth: 1830
from which I infer
that he is not doing
very well.
Wednesday — Your Father did
not come last night —
I suppose he will to day
He wrote me that the

would probably
be here the 2 d which
is Saturday of this week —
You know how gladly I
would have you go into
some business here which
would keep you near us —
but I have little influence
in determining others —
Thursday — I received a letter
from your Father last night
saying he would not be
home until Friday or Saturday
would return by the way
of Albany & the Napiers would
come about the same time
Will you give this note
to Fred — I have not time
to write a letter –
God bless you
Mother —
