Sunday
My dear Sister
I have your letter of
Thursday – Poor Maria
Birth: 1824 Death: 1858-12

has gone to render an account
to “Him who sees not as
man seeth” who knowing
our temptations and the
strength given to resist them
judgest not with mans
judgement – Just and
merciful always in what
he gives and in what he
requires, the most feeble
and the most wayward
when they appeal to Him
will be “lifted up & strength-
ened” – It is sad to look
back 35 years to the time
Page 2

when the helpless baby
was left without a
mother and it seemed to
me then, thrown upon my
care – That I have failed to
do my duty by her in some
way I doubt not – though
the darkness in which we
grope does not now
enable me to mark the
deficiency – May God
take care of her now.
Mary
Birth: 1836
has so long shared the
care of the children
x Birth: 1855  Death:   Birth:   Death:   Birth: 1850  Death:   Birth: 1844  Death:
that
her duties will not materially
increase – still she is but
a child herself and I
fear will not be able
to manage them very well.
Let me know what you & Clara
Birth: 1793-05-01 Death: 1862-09-05

think best as regards them
all –
Henry
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
& Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
have gone to church
Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
is writing a letter to
Sarah Hance
Birth: 1820-01-25 Death: 1867-06-10
– The day is
dull and drizzling – I
suppose the evening will
bring some members of Congress
They were assembling all
day yesterday – I have
many letters to write but
cannot write them today.
Henry & Will are established
in the basement office –
no shelves for books yet –
Kate
Birth: 1837 Death: 1878-04-08
suffers a good deal
with neuralgia – I fear
it will be a long time before
she recovers entirely from
the effects of the Ether.
