Editorial Note

Frances Adeline Seward wrote “Jan.”, but based on the content of the letter, it was written in February.

My dear Will,
Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
has told you
of the disabled hand which
prevented me from writing
you and Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
for a
while. I suppose since
her return you have heard
all the family news– the
report of the voyage– etc.
I am still at Mr
Souder’s
Birth: 1805-02-11 Death: 1873-09-11
– having a very
agreeable visit. I thin
I shall not go back to
Washington before the last
of next week. How
pleased I should be if
you should happen to
make your journey there

then– and could stop for
me on the way. Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02

writes me of Augustus’s
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11

return. I have no letter
this morning– but had
a telegram last evening
from father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
, saying all
were well– prevented
from writing during the day.
When we I first came
we had delightful weather–
but since Tuesday it
has been bad– & I have
stayed indoors– as Mrs
Souder
Birth: 1814-06-05 Death: 1886-12-22
thought it imprudent
to go out– & though I
have done so at home– I
wished to be extremely
prudent here.
I have seen Sam
Birth: 1838-04-16 Death: 1916-02-22

& his wife
Birth: 1837 Death: 1906
and John
Seward
Birth: 1811
. Shopped a little

on Chestnut street where
the shop windows are as
brilliant & attractive as ever–
One day we drove over to Fair-
mount, & saw a little skating–
which is the absorbing amuse-
ment of the day here.
I was much pleased
to learn from Aunty how
well you were looking– &
hope you are feeling
equally so. I was pained
to learn that Jenny was not
altogether well– & hope for
better news. Give her
much love for me–
love to Nelly

& Willie
Birth: 1864-11-10

Very affectionately your sister
Fanny
