Auburn
Sunday, 29th July 1866.
My dearest Father,
Your letters of the 26th & 27th
have reached me – with the
interesting accounts of the
feast for returned Tennessee – and
the lonely tomb-stone on the
road to Arlington.
I have a nice long letter
from Mary Grier
Birth: 1839-09-05 Death: 1930-06-04
– full of
warm interest in you &
Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
– hoping you will both
find rest after the adjourn-
ment of Congress and
that you will both visit
Goshen when you come North.
My little note to Mr Stanton
Birth: 1814-12-19 Death: 1869-12-24
was left open that you might
read it if you liked.
Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
was here an hour or
two yesterday. We had
a pleasant drive to the lake
after dinner. Later eEllen came
and spent part of the evening
with me. Then I read
some of the proceedings in
Congress – about Mr. Patterson’s
Birth: 1818-02-28 Death: 1891-11-03
admission – Mr Stoke’s
Birth: 1814-09-09 Death: 1897-03-14
letter,
etc. – I saw by the Tribune
last night that Union College
had made you Dr of Laws.
I spent most of yesterday
morning in the garden – where
the robins are very numerous
and tame.Mary Titus
Birth: 1846-01-11 Death: 1913-03-14
came
to take up some reading we
had planned – and I listened
to "The Last of the Mohicans"
Author: James Fenimore Cooper Publisher: W. A. Townsend and Company Place of Publication:New York City Date: 1859
under the trees!
I sent you no letter yesterday
as I supposed it could not
reach you sooner than this.
Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
expects to set out on his
western tour tomorrow morning
by the early train.
We have not yet had time
to hear that Congress hasad-
journed but as it was
to do so, I am rejoicing in
the belief that that much
desired event has taken
place. Now may we not
hope to see you in Auburn?
We all talk of a hope for
your coming – the only person
who is sanguine enough
to appoint a time when you
will certainly be here is Nelly
Birth: 1862-09-11 Death: 1921-10-05
–
who in the past week
asserted that “Grandpa was
coming next week.” How
glad I shall be when he
can come!
Love to all.
Most affectionately your daughter
Fanny
