Teusday July 9th
My dear Son,
I am glad to hear
this morning that the
defeat of Gen. Patterson
Birth: 1792-01-12 Death: 1881-08-07
was a false report–
It came in our telegraph
report last night–
We are constantly expecting
some great event – and
every rumour is greatly
magnified– I know
the troops must have
suffered yesterday the
Thermometer has stood
above 90–
[top Margin] Tell Nicholas
Birth: 1801-12-24 Death: 1893-02-15
that Harriet
Birth: 1807 Death: 1888-08-20
is better. I am to send for her to come
[left Margin] here tomorrow
I have read the messages
and the reports of the
Sec. of the Treasury
Birth: 1808-01-13 Death: 1873-05-07
& War
Birth: 1799-03-08 Death: 1889-06-26
– The
first I shall not criticise– The
Treasury report is very
able the War both
able & generous–
This is only my opinion
which is not of much
value– Since I
have been alone I have
employed myself in looking
over the cards and
notes your Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
brought from Europe & am
trying to arrange
them when I can read
the signatures which
is not always–
Mrs Martin
Birth: 1818-12-25 Death: 1899-07-09
would like them for her book
of Autograph letters
but I think we will
keep them ourselves–
John Watrous
Birth: 1801 Death: 1862
is dead,
I have a letter from
his mother - a very
unmotherly letter it is.
I think the hardships
she has encountered
have embittered her
feelings which were
always unaccountable
to me.
Give the enclosed letter
to Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
to give to Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
when he comes
He writes that he has
heard nothing from
me since the 3d of
March.
I drove up to Pisgah
last evening taking Aunty
Miller
Birth: 1796 Death: 1836
with me. Pisgah is very pretty - the trees
are growing finely and
the flowers blooming
with wonderful Luxuriousness
Aunty seems very happy
there this summer.
To night I expect Aunt
Clara
Birth: 1793-05-01 Death: 1862-09-05
& Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
.
Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
& Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
have come. Love to Anna
May God keep you
Mother
